Papa Poule - another layout

This is another layout for one of the shots, Once the animation is cleaned up and coloured I'll colour this in so we have another finished shot

Papa Poule - Tweaking the Background

This is the background for the coloured shot that we have, three stages of tweaking. I think the third image is our final background now, Lucie seems to be happy with it which is great!

Papa Poule - First official background and finished shot?!

So we have a cleaned up, coloured shot and I thought it would be a good idea to turn the layout I did into a background so that we have a finished shot for the animatic milestone tomorrow. So here's the background I did but I haven't had to okay from Lucie yet so it might change but just for now, I quickly just imported the background into the TVPaint file and exported it just to see how it would look and ahhh it looks great! I'm so excited to carry on with it and see it all come together!

Papa Poule Layout

Here's another layout done for Papa Poule for one of the cleaned up and coloured shots we have, I'm going to finish this as a background so we have a finished shot to show tomorrow.

Papa Poule - Layout

I think this could definitely be cleaned up a bit more, so I might re do it. I struggled a lot with the chair....I hate drawing chairs especially when I have to consider perspective and ugh, its a no from me.

Landlubber Layouts

I've spent the day doing layouts for Landlubber and Papa Poule. I'm not feeling too great today so I might call it a day and do some dissertation work in stead as I don't think I'm in the right mindset to draw, I know it has to be done but i'd rather take a break from it and then come back to it rather than just doing it at bad quality.

Landlubber - finished test

I finished the test that I started yesterday and I really like it! I'm really starting to get a good sense of geography now and getting used to it, I still just need to work out lighting and the water which i'm really struggling with but apart from that, it's going good!

Landlubber - Paralax

So one of the shots is a panning shot so I did this: Jess apparently wanted a layout rather than a finished background but I guess there was a miscommunication somewhere. I still need to figure out lighting and water but we're getting there slowly.

I ended up doing the wrong angle so I had to re do it:

Landlubber - Establishing shot

So there's an establishing shot at the beginning of the film  which zooms in onto the pool, so I tried to do it but when I completed it I noticed how untidy it looked, all outlines were wobbly so I redid it and I think it looks so much better. I've also made a start on a view of one wall, I'm doing to do each of the four walls so artists know the exact layout and what's in the room and where it is etc.

Papa Poule - Props/elements in pauls room?

This is of course unfinished/in progress. I decided to draw up some of the individual objects in pauls room just to get practice, breakdown exactly what's in the room, know what they're going to look like and get a bit of an idea about the colours (even though the colour palette might change)

Landlubber - Layout of pool

This is the layout of the pool at the moment. Hopefully this doesn't change because I've started to do backgrounds now based on this layout. This was very quickly done so some of the elements don't look right or look scruffy but to be honest it's just to get an idea of colours and where everything is positioned in the room.

Papa Poule - Another background with new colour palette

So I still haven't had any confirmation about a final colour palette from Lucie so at the moment, I;m still testing using the ones she's working with at the moment. I like it, but i'm just so used to the other palette that I can't really get into this one. I'm sure I will the more tests I do.

Landlubber - Props?

So the backgrounds are nearly there, I just need to work on lighting and how to illustrate the water but also I feel that the backgrounds need a little more detail without making them too complicated or busy for the style. So I just came up with a few props that could pop up in the film somewhere, such as pool props and pirate props. I might need to tweak the style of these a little bit because I wouldn't say they're very stylised but then that could just be me critiquing my own work as usual and it could be fine, I'll ask someone tomorrow. I think they look okay for now though, just gives us an idea of what props we need to think about. I haven't quite finished two of these yet, I have more to add but this is how it's looking at the moment

Landlubber - backgrounds for animatic

Drawing some refined layouts and backgrounds to use for the animatic.
I think this needs work in terms of the lighting and the door needs to be more realistic but it's alright as a placeholder at the moment while we're designing the actual door.

Papa Poule - Plants

So Paul is a huuuge plant person and Lucie wants lots of plants in his apartment, so I've drawn out a few here but they need tweaking, but at least it gives me a variety of ideas for plants, even if I change the colours.

ayyyyyy shadow!! I thought the image above needed something so here it is!

Papa Poule - New colour palette for backgrounds?!

So Lucie has decided to change the whole colour palette for the backgrounds, so using the colours she's got at the moment (they might and probabl will change) I just had a go at doing some quick background tests with the new colours to see how it looks and also added the same texture as before to see if it still works with the new colours.

Background 1 without texture:

Background 1 with texture:

Background 2 without texture:

Background 2 with texture:

To be honest, I cant decide if I prefer it with or without texture, maybe we could change the texture to something different and one that matches the colour a bit better? I'm playing it by ear at the moment because Lucie is currently changing the colour palette so for now I think i'll just play around with these colours adding different textures.

Ticked Off - Background Tests

I've agreed to help out a little with backgrounds on Amy and Jasmine's film, Ticked Off. So this is my first attempt at a background, just to see the layout of the clock and get an overall feel of the mood and atmosphere. Jasmine is a very organised producer so she made sure I had all the references and resources I needed to do this, and I'm really happy with it. I like the style, it needs some tweaking because of course, i'll have to get used to the style but overall, it's looking good and I think Amy and Jasmine are pleased with it too.

Landlubber - more backgrounds

I watched the new animatic and decided to do some backgrounds based on the angles used in the animatic, there's one shot that's underwater so I thought i'd give that one a go to see how we would show that it's underwater, I think this works well except the bubbles, there's something about them, but overall I'm really pleased! especially because I've never done anything like this before, so for a first attempt, I'm happy. I'm glad backgrounds are getting underway now so I can experiment and get a final design. In the middle ofwriting this, Jess came over and she approves of my underwater background! which is great!

Landlubber - more water testing

This is the original background I did with a temporary placeholder for the water, and below is the same background but with the water texture I created, I'd obviously need to perfect it as it doesn't look right against the wall but I actually quite like it, the yellow and blue colours work really well and the style of water goes well with the background in my opinion. I'll keep playing around with this and see what else I can come up with

Landlubber - testing the dreaded water

So Jess wants the water to be inspired by the water in Tom and Jerry: Splash hotel. I've been dreading designing the water because it's something I've always struggled with and I don't really do it often so it takes time getting used to doing it. I started off easy and just experimented with brushes and textures

Below: I actually quite like this, it's a shame that it's nothing like the style we're going for but we could see what it looks like and go from there. I started trying to imitate the water in Tom and Jerry but then it just turned into this! Ah well, practice makes perfect, the question is - how many practices is it going to take?!

Landlubber - Tweaking the background

Looks very similar to the one I previously posted but I've added a few bits here and there, I've decided that the main light source is going to be from the back window, that's where the sun will be. I've started adding shadow by the benches but I need to get better at lighting, I'm actually quite nervous about it but I'm sure it'll come with practice. I've also added a pool ladder but I think it needs to be redone as it looks a bit scatty - well I think so anyway but i'll double check with jess and see what she thinks. I've also added a temporary water texture until we get a final water design, I need to play around with the water design, it's going to be hard but it needs to be done! I think it's looking good though!

Landlubber - background design development!!

So I had a discussion with Kathy about my concerns and then spoke to Jess and I was able to get some ideas out of her and sort of get an idea of what she wants. This is a background I did (in progress/unfinished at the moment), sticking with the same colour palette but overlaying textures. It kind of reminds me of looney tunes a bit, so I decided to incorporate some things inspired by looney tunes in the background. For example, I used the background art in the image of daffy duck as inspiration for the windows and I think we could also use the lighting from this too perhaps. I just need to figure out how we're going to stylise the water and add the pool ladder and a few touches here and there and then I can use this as an example to do other backgrounds. I'm quite happy that we're finally getting somewhere with this now, as we only have just over two weeks until we hand in 30 seconds of finished animation which means getting some backgrounds done.

Landlubber - test backgrounds using 3d model.

I'm not happy with these, purely because i'm not really getting any direction with the style and overall design of the film, there is no concept art and only a bit of R&D as inspiration but at this point i'm basically making it up as I go along, all I've got from the director is that it has to be watercolour, I think i'll speak to my tutor about the design as i'm really struggling with it at the moment, mainly because it's not my vision, it's the director's and I need them to tell me what they want. It's also difficult without an animatic to know what angles and perspectives we need, so for now i'm just practicing with my own angles using the 3d model.

I used watercolour paper texture and changed the opacity so it's very subtle but you can still see it and I quite like it, but of course ultimately it's up to the director so I'll see what she thinks. Also, because of the textures that I've overlayed, the image loses a bit of colour overall so I might have to brighten the colours underneath a bit.

Landlubber 3D model

I didn't make this 3D model, Chandani did, but I took these screenshots and i'm going to do some layouts and test backgrounds to get a feel of the perspective and space. I need to go for more dramatic angles too as these are quite basic.

Backgrounds PDF workshop for Papa Poule

So as lead background artist for Papa Poule, I thought now that I'm used to the style and design that I should create a workshop file for the background artists to follow, as I know that many of our artists will be at different levels and may find it difficult to adapt to the style, so as well as approaching me for help, this should help them too if they are struggling. These images are just snippets of the actual PDF. I have just noticed a spelling mistake which is heartbreaking - ill have to change it!
